Floods update Blue Nile State, 17 Aug 2008

Resident Coordinator's Office - Damazine, Blue Nile State, Sudan

Damazine town:

The following neighborhoods are affected by flash floods after heavy rainfall: Hai Azibair, Hai Almusalas, Hai Alwohda (All three together are also known as Hai Alzihhor). The number of affected houses is according to Civil Defense 136, but according to Damazine locality it is 176 houses.

Roseris locality:

157 households are affected in Roseris town and 18 families in Gansi.

The road from Damazine to Roseris is inundated on the Roseris side. Intervention has been requested. Moreover, the bridge, which links the northern part of the town with the market area, is about to collapse.

One primary school had to be closed since the roof might collapse. Four others primary schools have also been affected by the heavy rain.

In the Liwona area, west of Damazine town, 154 houses have been affected by flash floods (figures not yet verified). Another affected area is called Abo Zogli, but no figures of affected households are available yet.

Interventions:

The Blue Nile State Government is digging trenches to drain the water from the flooded neighborhoods. This will likely reduce the water level significantly. (However, it is not fully clear if the draining water will not affect then other areas of Damazine.)

The decision about another potential intervention, which is to resettle some of the affected people temporarily, has been postponed for the time being.

No intervention yet in the affected areas in Roseris and Geissan.

Supplies required:

More latrines.

Pesticides to treat the stagnant water.

Mobile clinic to closely observe the health situation (potential implementing partner: UNMIS Pakistani Medical Camp).

If people have finally still to be relocated various other supplies are needed such as shelter, NFI, food, health supplies.

Assessments conducted/planned:

17 August 2008: SRC together with a WFP representative has begun to conduct an assessment of all affected households in Damazine in order to get exact figures and to identify the needs.

17 August 2008: WHO and UNICEF assessed a sample of households and found no flood-related outbreak of diseases, but very poor conditions of latrines.

No assessment yet in the affected areas in Roseris and Geissan.
